Portland Firsts Map
This map and poster announces Portland State University's lecture series for 2011-12. The features included in the map reference the theme of the lecture series: firsts, origins and beginnings. The map includes elements related to Portland's founding and dominance among early cities in the Pacific Northwest, including the Willamette River, historic terrain, first 16 blocks and the Old Plank Road (which connected the Tualatin Valley to river commerce). The map is based on a series of surveys and plat maps of Portland from the 1850s and 60s.

The map image and the lecture series information are organized on two distinctly colored layers. Both layers were overprinted to create a sense of depth and visual interest.

Donutowns Map
This map of Massachusetts re-imagines the Commonwealth's municipal boundaries by identifying Dunkin Donut store locations and implementing the Voronoi theorem to establish borders around them. The new towns encompass the territory that is closest to its respective store. The colors are consistent with Dunkin Donuts' orange and pink. This map began as part of the Redraw, Reboot project and was re-developed as a detailed, screen-printed map, shown here.

BSA Space Comparison
This information graphic compares the spaces in the Boston Society of Architect's current building with spaces in their future building adjacent to Boston's Greenway. The graphic allows for easy comparison of 4 different types of spaces: exhibit, meeting, program and office space. The graphic was published in the BSA Newsletter and incorporated into an exhibit describing the new headquarters building.

The vignette sketches of the buildings facilitate quick identification of the two buildings. The square units, each representing 300 square feet, enable the reader to quickly visualize the enormous differences in size and to make more detailed, accurate comparisons between the different spaces.

Bridgetown/Bicycletown

Portland's bridges are the busiest bicycle routes in the city. The Bureau of Transportation has conducted bicycle counts for the Broadway Bridge, Steel Bridge, Burnside Bridge and Hawthorne Bridge since 1991. This map-infographic displays data from the bicycle counts in order to compare the ridership levels between bridges, show growth in ridership over the past two decades and to show changes between automobile and bicycle use of the bridges.

In addition to the data-driven characteristics of the graphic, I also created a series of logos for each bridge. They are incorporated into the poster and also produced as buttons.

Which bridge do you bike?

OHSU Centralize + Serve Publication
Centralize + Serve is a short publication that builds an argument for reorganizing several administrative departments at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). A series of custom-designed diagrams and photographs describe the advantages of the realignment. The document's size and large-scale graphics allow the book to function at two scales: in one-on-one settings and with 8-10 people gathered around a conference table.

The Regional Equity Atlas

The Regional Equity Atlas grew out of the Coalition for a Livable Future’s assessment that equity and its relationship to sustainable development was not generally understood by the public and policymakers. Working together with the Coalition, urban planners, writers and cartographers, we crafted an evaluation of Portland, Oregon’s equitable distribution of resources and created the Regional Equity Atlas to help disseminate the findings.

The design of the 156-page atlas seeks to make access to its data as simple and clear as possible by using organizing devices such as tabs, re-designing the figures and re-organizing the tables to aid legibility.

Paste in Place designed the Atlas and accompanying tables and charts. The Portland State University Population Research Center created and designed the maps.
